The Medical Buzz
(Voice of the Medical Workers)
October 2009
THE MEDICAL PROFFESSIONAL AND ALLED WORKERS UNION is not happy on the situation that whilst the medical field is one amongst a few industries dominated by professionals ,for years we have endured the worst working conditions ever witnessed in Zimbabwe resulting in many of us opting to leave our motherland seeking tedious jobs outside the country .
Again we salute those of us who have remained in the country working under severest conditions where job losses, victimisation and poor remuneration have been rampant. We understand that the endurance have , to some extent been due to a calling and commitment to save our dear brothers and sisters lives from epidemic diseases that befell our nation some time.
Now we declare no more and it’s over!!!
One of the reasons why we have been working under such worst conditions is that for years we did not have a trade union that fights for our rights whereas our employers have their own employer’s organisation where they discuss how they make their profits and in the way exploit us to the maximum. In some cases we have had individuals claiming to represent us yet in actual fact they were just bogus persons aiming to deceive us with virtually no interest in representing us.
Now we have a very annoying disproportionate waging system in our industry that is based on how much our individual employers are willing to pay us at a particular time .This has resulted in some shameless employers giving scanty wages. Workers have nowhere to appeal because unlike other industries we do not have a centralised bargaining mechanism that has to be done at NEC level. For many of those who had the courage of challenging such unfair labour practises by employers have ended up victimised and lost their jobs.
Nurses and their supporting staff deserve better salaries and working conditions than this we currently witness. We can only achieve that if we build a strong union that brings together experiences from various other workers in the medical profession and speak with one voice. United we conquer and divided we fall!!
The Medical Professional and Allied Workers Union urge you to begin that process by filing in the Joining forms obtainable from your workers committee.
We are in the process of engaging our employers to form an NEC that will start bargaining for our salaries across the board and it is our target that by December this year if workers do join the Union “Chibhanzi tii kuvashandi and No more arbitrary sackings!!” that’s our commitment. But we can’t achieve that without you, so join the union and join the struggle for a better industry.
Shinga Mushandi Shinga , Qina Msebenzi Qina !!! Vashandi Tamuka !!
Build a fighting union
